Songs For The Road
Where Do You Live?
Since their invention, automobiles have become an integral to the society and culture of the United States. Cars have been the inspiration for movies, TV’s shows, video games, books and comics, and even music.
First is Don McLean’s “American Pie.” It is nearly impossible to define the influence and popularity of this song. The deaths of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richtie Valens, helped spark the inspiration for this song. This song has come to be an icon of America and it’s folk and rock and roll roots. It especially helped galvanize Chevy’s image as an American icon with the famous line, “I drove my Chevy to the levy, but the levy was dry.” The song was number 1 for 4 weeks on the Billboard charts. It also gave us the phrase “the day the music died,” and inspired the song Grammy winning song, “Killing Me Softly,” sung by Roberta Flack. It is considered one of the most important songs in American music. At used car dealers in Kansas you will be sure to find a car you love.
Moving ahead a decade brings us to the 1980’s and Bruce Springsteens, “Pink Cadillac.” This slightly suggestive song was on “Dancing in Dark’s” B sides, but never made famous until Natalie Cole covered it in 1988. It did give us a hint of things with the phrase, “I just wonder what you did in the back of your pink Cadillac.” While Mary Kay cosmetics may benefit from this song, it was not written about them. Keeping with the 80’s theme we now go to Prince and a song about a girl and yet another Chevy. “Little Red Corvette,” debuted in 1983 on Prince’s album 1999. It was his first song to reach the top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and peaked at 6. It was also his first song to perform better on the pop charts then the R&B charts, this largely due to the rock/pop music in the chorus. Most people don’t realize this song is one big sexual analogy, which works well for Chevy’s marketing team. Lastly, don’t forget the Beatles very famous, “Drive My Car.” It was released on the Brittish version of Rubber Soul in 1965. The song tells the story of a man who meets a woman who claims she will be a famous movie start and she offers him the chance to be her chauffeur. Once she get’s him to agree to be her chauffer, she informs him she does not own a car. Paul McCartney admitted later that this song posed some of the more difficult lyrics for him and John Lennon to write. He also later admitted that much like Prince’s “Little Red Corvette,” the phrase “Drive My Car” was another sexual reference.
